Civil Defense launches smoke detectors campaign, urges the public to install them

The Civil Defense General Command in the Ministry of Interior launched an awareness campaign on the installation of smoke detectors in residential villas. The campaign is being launched in collaboration with the Security Media Department as part of its annual plan that is based on the Ministry of Interior's strategy geared towards promoting safety among the community members.

The campaign titled Smoke detector is your home protector’ aims at reducing losses and saving lives by warning residents to evacuate from their villas when a fire breaks out.
At a press conference held at the marina call in Abu Dhabi to announce the launch, Major-General Jassim Al Marzouqui, general commander of the Civil Defense in the Ministry of Interior, said, We coordinated with a number of smoke detectors companies to provide enough quantities of smoke detectors at affordable price. We have also prepared an awareness program to promote the culture of prevention and the safety behavior among the family members.

Al Marzouqui noted that one of the most important causes of home fires is the poor preventive awareness among some family members. Therefore, the people should have smoke detectors installed at their homes and keep them regularly maintained to avoid any fire.

A study in the US, Canada, Britain and Australia in 2015 revealed that 95% of the total population in these countries are users of smoke detectors. This has decreased the number of fires and related fatalities by 75%.
He further urged families to install the devices that are certified by the civil defense authorities in the country.

The campaign will continue for three days before moving to the other emirates, according to Colonel Mohammed Al Tikawi, director of media affairs at the General Command of Civil Defense who added that the campaign, in partnership with the security media department at the ministry of interior will send awareness messages through all the media channels including the social media.
