The Ministry of Interior participated in the 34th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The UAE delegation included members of the Initiative for preparing national human rights cadre, as part of completing the practical application of the "national cadres" outside the country.
The delegation was briefed on the mechanism of action of the Human Rights Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It was also briefed on the mechanism followed in conducting meetings of the Council and the interaction between experts of committees and the delegations of the concerned country.
The delegation visited a number of human rights bodies, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the permanent premises of the GCC countries and the building and the museum of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent. The delegation also attended workshops and lectures delivered by experts of the UAE Mission in the field of human rights and relevant international organizations, as part of getting acquainted with the efforts made in humanitarian work in Geneva.
Brigadier Ahmed Mohammed Nukhaira, Director of the Human Rights Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of HH the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior said that the Ministry is committed to spreading and raising awareness of the foundations and principles of respecting human rights, as well as safeguarding the fundamental freedoms, rights and dignity of members of society, as guaranteed by the UAE Constitution, laws and legislations that have been derived from the values and teachings of the Islamic religion,
Nukhaira also underlined the eagerness of the Ministry to improve police work so that it reaches the best of humanitarian practices in dealing with members of the community without discrimination.
He pointed out that the initiative which came into force in early 2014, is the first of its kind in the region and is one of the ministry's strategic initiatives that falls in line with the UAE Cabinet vision to improve the capabilities of the national cadres.
The delegation was received by Ambassador Obeid Salem Al Zaabi, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva. He praised the efforts made to ensure the success of this national work whereby a group of UAE citizens were trained in the field of human rights.
Colonel Dr. Ahmed Yousif Al Mansouri, member of the Human Rights Committee at the Ministry of Interior, thanked the UAE Ambassador and all those who contributed to the success of this visit by providing all facilities to the delegation while in Geneva.
Major Abdul Rahman Jassim Al Dhaheri, the Initiative's supervisor, said that the visit was planned to apply the practical phase outside the UAE following the practical implementation phase which was completed inside the country. Staff members received training at the police departments, national and local government bodies and civil society institutions related to human rights after completing theoretical training. They obtained a professional diploma in human rights, after which the evaluation and measurement of results will be conducted.
