Virtual Symposium on Illegal Trade of Cultural Properties and its link to Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing
A virtual symposium organized by MOI in liaison with Safe Communities Forum discussed measures the governments and civil society could take towards the issue of trading in cultural properties, exchange experience, the best practices to combat this phenomenon, and unveil its link to organized and extremist criminal groups, money laundering and terrorism financing.
The Symposium was entitled Trade in cultural properties in which leading representatives of government, police authorities and international organizations spoke about the topics included in the session's themes, which encompasses strategies to confront and means to monitor trade in cultural property, and prosecute those involved in it, including thieves, illicit traders, brokers, terrorist organizations and means of transportation inside countries and around the world. The participants emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation between relevant institutions to combat such phenomenon, and pay due attention to legislations that facilitate the pursuit of thefts inside countries and ensures its consistency with international laws in this regard.
